Anyway, guess who Daddy did not want to be seen with, since her rare but irreversible condition set in at the age of four? Her Daddy's little girl wasn't so precious with a defect. None of the rest of the Cheshire Set wanted to know, or if they brought the subject up, it would be to grind it into her Daddy that their kids were perfect ... So she stayed at home, and hardly knew her parents, and in her own time (of which there was a lot) she learned to play piano, and she became very good at it. She also learned a load of other musical instruments, the violin in particular - but her one and only love is pianos. Her chosen musical field ... jazz. This was done as much to piss her father off as it was out of love of the music, which really did something for her. Between jazz concerts, Sally went to University, paying her own way. She did remarkably well, pushing for greater recognition of the needs of blind students. She got a First in Psychology, majoring in Abnormal Psychology. She was imbued at a jazz concert. She was given Sight, and something beyond Sight: a talent she still cannot explain, which gave her a power to see, even blind as she was. She loves the Heralds for their miraculous gift ... and abhors them for making the first thing she saw as an adult a scene of terrifying horror and ugliness. So now, she plays piano for the rich monsters, and none of them even notice her, let alone consider her a threat. Because of her defects, none of them want to touch her - the bastards seem to think blindness is contagious, an attitude which Astraea finds seems to be universal among people, regardless of whether they're imbued, normal or monstrous. Only a handful of people treat her properly, as a human being. Zeiss was the first. And because Libra accepted her instantly as an imbued of a similar viewpoint, recognising her net codename - Astraea, blind goddess of justice - Astraea is utterly loyal to Libra's cause. |
